Foureau, Fernand
(1850-1914)
   explorer
   Born in saint-Barbant, Haute-vienne, Fernand Foureau, after having taken part in several expeditions in southern Algeria as part of a scientific study of the Sahara (1888-96), undertook a crossing of the Sahara and the Sudan regions of Africa, through ouargia and Chad and reached the Congo (1898-1900). In 1906, he was named governor of Mayotte and the Comoros. He created a map of the sahara region (1908) and wrote several works (Rapport sur ma mission au Sahara et chez les Touraregs Azdjers, 1894; D'Alger au Congo par le Tchad, 1902; Documents scientifiques de la mission saharienne, 1903-05).
